Cribs and toddler beds

Bassinets & Moses Baskets

The Moses baskets are great for new borns and up to around 3-4 months old, they provide a portable sleeping area that can be portable for were you want your baby to sleep, although these are not essential they can make life easier as they are easily moveable enabling you to keep a close eye on them at all time. You can use a crib for sleeping your baby but mosses baskets give you flexibility.

CribsChoosing a good crib is worth the investment these will be used from birth and to for the first few years, so a good one that meets your standards is worth the time. Baby will spend about 3 years in them.

A crib is usually made from wood and is slightly larger than a Moses basket and will be more expensive.

What to look for -

Drop-Side CribCribs can be bought with one or two drop sides, these sides can be raised or lowered with one hand allowing you to cradle the baby. For stability buy a cradle with one drop side, these are generally our more secure.

Crib with Castors

Cribs can be bought with casters, these allow you to move them around easier, if you are looking for cribs with casters make sure they lock securely so they can’t move.

Teething rails for cribs

Cribs can come with a smooth plastic covers for the top rails these will protect your baby gums when he decides to chew everything!

Convertible or Stage Cribs

These are larger than standard cribs and allow the sides to be removed, so they can be converted in to a toddler bed, they can be a good choice as they have a long life span.

Travel Cribs/Cots

Are you showing your newborn around a great travel accessory is the travel crib these will fold up small and enable you to transport; they usually have removable, washable matrices.

Toddler Beds

The toddler bed is in between the crib and a standard bed, they are idea if a second child is on the way, the bed can be used with a cribs standard mattress, the toddler bed are not essential but will make a great addition if you don’t want a convertible or stage crib.

Nursery Furniture

As with all furniture it is good to look for quality that will last, neutral colors such as white will stay in fashion and will last a long time, themed furniture can be great but how long will it last?

Changing tables

When you change babies’ diapers or clothing, a changing table is a good idea. The changing table is a designed area to change the babies with places for storage with easy reach for diapers, cream, lotion, wipes and bins.

They will also include a changing mat. If you’re looking for a changing table try to find ones with guard rails for extra security.

Try to buy one before the babies born as this will save you struggling when looking after the baby. Beware close supervision need to be maintained especially when they can start to roll

Are they essential?

If you’re not happy spending money on changing table, a chest of draws at the right height can be used. The top needs to be large enough for the changing mat and have good sized draws for storage.

Chest of draws

As some people will double them up for a changing table, see if you can buy one with a back guard on the back, usual a chest of draws with three levels of draws will be a good height.

Combo tower

Again a good choice of these will last a long time; the great thing about combo towers is their versatility as your little ones will not always be little. A good combo tower will offer a changing area with storage. Look for a combo tower that can be changed in to a dress or even a book case.

Armoires

If your baby has a big room then an armoire might be for you, these can be bought in a range of styles and wood, these can be a great compliment to large rooms, with their huge storage space and will last from baby to child.
