You need to write a quick statement this will act as an overview for what you want to achieve, although this isn’t set in stone it will keep your mind focused. Here’s my example - I want to build a toy box for my nephew, it will make a great present for his birthday. His mother told me that he loves any thing to do with Noah’s ark. My woodworking skills are minimal but I enjoy learning new things. Here a few question that can help you create your design brief- Who is it for?How long have you got to build? What do they like? Did you write down a design brief, simple isn’t it? Step 2 - The Research Now you’ve got the brief we need to do some research, this will help you put together a final plan. Research will get you mind buzzing; it gives you inspiration of new and maybe better ideas, showing what’s being sold today. Also you can see how the toy boxes are made and if there’s any special features. Researching other toy box Have a peak at this page to see the possibilities. And See if you can notice – Colour schemes that work and don’t work?Size that you can make? The design feature is it natural wood or painted?Dose the toy boxes have wheels or raised from the floor? What it made from hard wood, softwood, MDF? How the boxes are’s finished? Painted, varnished, any graphics? Researching the materials and tools You now need to know what materials are available to you and the cost.So price and size of wood Hardware, hinges etcPaints, stencils Tools you will need to buy Were will it be placed will it fit in?What tools will I need to build this Tools needed Research your skills and Will you need training on painting? What skills do you need to learn, installing safety hinges, painting correctly? How to use a plan correctly? So the picture is coming clearer, now its time to get specific. By the way take your time in each step of course you want it perfect. Step 3 Specification. What your going to do, is get down to the nitty gritty, were going to specify what we need to design a toy box. I good thing to ask your self is – After looking at all the research what have I found out that bring the design brief to life. Can you see what were doing here? We’ve started with an idea in the design brief, and then researched the possible solutions, and now you’re evaluating your findings for the best possible result for your toy box. So what have you found from your research that could be used in your my final design plan? Asking these questions will be of help to drill down and specify. I’ll give you my brief for an example What’s your outcome? - To make a boys toy box What colors work with the toy boxes environment? - A white box painted with egg shell with a stencil of Noah’s ark on itAny special features? - To add a soft lid so the parent can sit and read bedtime stories What skills do I need to learn? - I need to find out how to install hinges What Materials will the box be made from? - As it is being painted I will use MDF What Tools do I need? - I need a new work bench; it’s a good excuse to buy a new tool! How much will it cost? - Not fully sure but will be under $20 How big will it be? - Not sure yet Time scale - I will but a side 4 Saturdays in total Is the design safe? - I am installing a safety hinge and if will have a soft foam lid Now continue to the toy box plan
