Let’s see that grain

If you have furniture with an attractive grain, or just want a more rustic feel then showing of the woods assets could be for you. Depending what type of wood you have will determine the patter of the grain, here are some ways to protect it.

Varnish

Varnish is added to bare timber. Varnish will add a glossy finish and dry to form a hard coating. The varnish will protect the wood for a long time. Varnish is available to buy clear or there’s a range of tints, and the more coat of varnish the stronger the colour gets.

A good quality wax will remove the grime from the wood, the wax will dry, harden and give a natural sheen. Furniture waxes can be bought with tints of colour in them.

Linseed oil does not cover the surface like a varnish does; it soaks in to the pores of the wood to leave a shiny but non glossy finish. Linseed oil is from mother earth so it’s very green, but not as hard as varnish.

A cost effective way of changing the woods colour is to use a wood stain. There are a great range of wood stains to use from and they are easy and quick to apply. A touch of gloss

A good furniture painting idea is finish the furniture with a coat of gloss, this will make the furniture very natural that will fit in to most rooms, the gloss will set to a hard finish and it is available in a range of sheens, my favourite is the egg shell (a slightly less shinny gloss).
