How to make miter saw cuts using the miter box

The miter box offers a cheap and effective way of making 45 degree miters, but you’re limited to this angle.

Tool list – Sharp tennon saw, wooden miter box, 45 degree bevel and a sharp pencil

- Mark you timber were you want the miter, clearly marking the waste.

- If you want to protect the base of the miter box you can place a spare piece of wood under your work. (See Pic1)

- Place your timber in the miter box and clamp it in to position. Clamping is essential, this stops the saw pulling the timber away from a true cut.

- Before cutting check that you are cutting on the right side of the line, and in to the waste. You don’t want a short miter. (See Pic2)

- With you wooden miter box firmly supported gently saw through the timber. Do not force the saw as it will loosen your work from the clamp.

- Done, you’ve learnt how to miter cut

Manual Miter Saw

The manual miter saw is a strep up from the miter box. Instead of just cutting at 45 degree angles they allow you to cut up to50 degrees, because the miter saw has an adjustable base.

The saw is placed within a guide system that keeps the cuts accurate and to your selected angel.

The blade has fine teeth, (about 24 per inch) making it great for small intricate work like wooden mouldings.

How to make miter saw cuts using the manual miter saw

- Set the angle on the saw.

- Mark your work for the mite and the waste side.

- Lift up the saw and insert your work to the guide. Be careful that the teeth don’t catch your work.

- You can lower you saw to your marked line to make sure your work is in position.

- If your saw has a clamp, use it to secure you work. Other wise secure your work in position.

- Gently start the saw on the first few cuts and follow through and checking the cutting line until finished.

The electric miter saw

An electric miter saw will take the pain and struggle out of cutting perfect miters. These our great tools for any up and coming woodworker.

Electric miter saws vary in price and this reflects the quality. So beware of cheap miter saws as there not as accurate.

You can buy them in various blade sizes and sliding miter saws. Bigger blades and slides saws allow larger cutting.

Bevel and compound bevel miter saws

When using a miter saw different cutting angles can be set, allowing allow bevel and compound miter cuts

Bevel cutting is great for large angles and if you electric miter saw that has a sliding arm then you can cut even bigger timber.

Compound miter set up allows the saw to be set up with two angles, the above picture shows this well.

How to make miter saw cuts using an electric miter saw

Here your be using a miter saw, so following these steps will give you stress free miters and master how to miter cut.

Mark you work with the angle you need to cut. See Below

Make sure the timber is fully supported on the saw, remembering the the off cuts as well especially if there large.

Now starting the saw you can slowly start cutting and see if its going in the right direction.

When your happy with the angle, gently lower the saw through the timber, producing the miter.
